Currently, my students are at an unfair disadvantage from their county-wide peers because they do not have the language and experiences that are typical at other schools. Providing my students with rich vocabulary found in non-fiction books, will give these students an equal advantage and provide them with the background knowledge and experiences that are common among other students. This will make reading more accessible and understanding what they’ve read possible. While reading these books does not replace rich experiences, it does lessen the knowledge gap among students and provides an opportunity for all students to learn, grow and access grade level texts. Finally, non-fiction texts are just as important as fiction texts, but we aren’t sending that message to the students when ninety percent of the books we read are fiction. Increasing the number of non-fiction texts, my students are accessing explicitly shows them that non-fiction text is extremely important and interesting!
