  • I Don't Want to Stop! (Reading)

    Funded Mar 4, 2020

Thank you so much for helping me to add interesting books to my classroom library. The books I chose should be of high interest (since the students helped pick them out). I made sure to include a few series books so I can get students hooked on a series.

In my classroom, students (both at school and virtual) are being asked to read for at least twenty minutes a day and report on what they have read. Of course, I encourage students to read novels. The new books are always the ones that students gravitate to first. (I have a Yea! New books! space on my shelves.) They love being the first to read and tell others who should read it.

With this year's curriculum being mostly online learning in case we all end up being virtual due to covid-19, students will be allowed to read once their classwork is completed for the day. I am usually the book supplier in my school since I actually have more books than our school library. (We are a new school in an old building that does not really have the space for a library.) The more of a variety that I can bring into my own library, the more students I can reach. You made this possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tackett

  • Building Forever Readers

    Funded Dec 23, 2019

The books that I got from this project are so popular that I had to create a Google Classroom page for them! As soon as a book comes in, I post it as available, and there is a rush between classes to come claim it.

The YA books are so sought after that students will hunt the person down who has it checked out and pester them to finish it.

I have a small group of boys who admittedly are not reading enthusiasts but who have discovered the Greyson Gray series, and they are reading and swapping them as they finish them.

Finding the right books for the right readers is imperative!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tackett

  • Dance, Yoga, & Mindfulness for the Next Generation

    Funded Aug 4, 2019

I did my first yoga class with a group of fifth graders. I introduced them to several poses and taught them how to concentrate on one specific spot in the room to improve their balance. They learned Warrior poses 1 and 2, downward dog, angry cat, and several others. They loved it! They beg to do yoga every day.

Although clubs still haven't started, I am hoping to arrange to do yoga sessions through the P.E. classes, during advisory class, and possibly even after school. I think it will help students with flexibility, quieting their minds, and calming them down so they can focus.

Thank you so much for caring enough about my kids to give them this gift.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tackett

  • New Year, New Students, New Books!

    Funded Aug 1, 2019

I just wanted to let you know what a huge impact the books that I received have made in the classroom. I took one class period and read either the book jacket, the back of the book, or sometimes even the first few pages of each book to all of my seventh and eighth grade classes. Students made lists of the books that they wanted to read. What was super exciting to me was that EVERY SINGLE STUDENT HAD AT LEAST TWO BOOKS ON THEIR LIST! Some of these kids will tell you that they hate reading, but they really wanted to read some of these books. Each student got one sticky note for every book on their list. They then entered a lottery-style drawing to see who got to read the books first. Those that won were so excited to receive their books. I kept all of the bids in separate bags so that as the books get checked in, I draw another name, and they immediately get checked out again. Students are begging to have an entire period to read in class. Begging! This would not have been possible without your support. From all of my readers and me, thank you so much for your generosity!”

  • Give My Guys Their Shot! (At Reading)

    Funded Dec 16, 2018

Thank you so much for caring about reading enough to put books into the hands of my boys. Most of the books have already been checked out! I am thrilled to get my guys hooked on a book series like The Iron Trial books and the Eighth Grade Bites series. I love the fact that the Hardy Boys are still around and still getting students interested in reading.

I know that there were dozens of other things you could have done with your money. Thank you so much for choosing my kids to make an impact on.

    Yours truly,

    Amber Tackett”

I have been an English Language Arts teacher for quite a while, and over the years I have amassed a decent classroom library by bringing in my own books, buying sale and clearance books at stores, and buying as many young adult books as I can find at flea markets and our local charity store. However, it seems that the majority of my books are geared towards girls. The majority of my boys did not come to me as enthusiastic readers, but that is beginning to change! This year our school began requiring all students to read for AR points. While I know this is not the ideal way to make lifelong readers, and we've had our struggles with it, I have seen quite a change in the attitudes of my students towards books. I have had boys who NEVER read during their seventh and eighth grade years with me, come to me and say, "I really liked that last book I got from you. Do you have any others like it?" Another student who would tell you himself that he was a non-reader, plowed through the Miss Peregrine series faster than I did! My classroom library does not currently have enough "boy books" to satisfy their blossoming voracity for reading. Authors like Walter Dean Myers, books like the Magisterium series, and The Hardy Boys will hopefully appease them for a bit...before they get hungry and beg for more. That is my goal: to make voracious readers out of them.
