My students are primarily visual and tactile learners. What middle school student doesn't love a highlighter? One of our vocabulary strategies for approaching challenging texts is to skim for words we don't know. Then, we highlight them. Oh, the joy! The process of choosing the color they want. It is a production, But they get to choose. Again, what middle school student doesn't want to be able to make their own decisions, no matter how small? Highlighters, pencils, markers, and dictionaries will provide students with some of the tools necessary for acquiring new words. Students skim passages for unknown words. They highlight the new word. Then, they use the dictionary to find the definitions, which they write directly on to the passage. This forces students to preview the text (which they don't even realize), practice dictionary skills, and practice spelling. The highlighting alone is both visual and tactile. Skimming a text and then skimming a dictionary is visual. Touching the pages of the dictionary and writing definitions is tactile. This activity enables me to engage two learning styles at once.
