  • 3D Doodling Makes For Engaging Schooling

    Funded Nov 17, 2017

Thank you so much for your incredibly generous donation for our amazing 3Doodler Pens. As soon as my students saw the box sitting on my table, they just could not contain their excitement. They think that it is so incredibly cool to be able to draw in 3D. Our students this year have truly been through the ringer. Hurricane Harvey has completely changed the way that our students live their lives. Our school is sharing our campus with another middle school, and our kids are only attending school for half of the school day. Many of their homes were flooded, and they are incurring great hardships when they leave our campus. I have made it my duty to make sure that they not only learn while they are at school this year, but also have a great time while doing it. This project has allowed them to create a team-building project that incorporated STEM, art, collaboration, and inquiry. It brought great joy to my students, and for that, I am forever in your debt. Thank you so much for contributing to our learning experience, classroom environment, and the beautiful smiles on my students' faces.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Barnett

  • Memories May Fade But Pictures Last Forever

    Funded Nov 27, 2017

Thank you so very much for the supplies to make our family nights a success by providing pictures to families. We have not only utilized these materials at parent events, but we will also be purchasing a green screen to add to our set up to utilize the materials for in class activities as well. The families and students loved being able to receive photos that looked professional. The students are still practicing their photo-taking skills, but they are getting better! Thank you so much for this opportunity to give back to our students and their families.”

  • Teaching Students Organization With Binders

    Funded Nov 1, 2017

Thank you so very much for your incredibly generous donation. These two hundred binders have made a huge impact on our campus. Now every single student has the ability to stay organized and keep up with their school work. Thank you so much for being part of that. Out of all of the things that I have struggled with to replace after Hurricane Harvey, these binders have been the most difficult to replace. Thank you so much for helping relieve that burden. You have done a huge service by giving us an avenue to teach our students the skill of organization which will help us prepare our students for life.”

  • The Gift that Keeps Giving - Harvey Relief

    Funded Sep 18, 2017

Foremost, I want to thank you all for your incredibly generous donations. This week, we broke out our popcorn maker for the very first time. This year has brought on some unprecedented complications. As of right now, we have having to share our campus and our school day with our sister middle school as they patiently await their campus to be fixed. Being that we are currently only seeing our students 2-3 days a week for 60 minutes each day, every minute of every class becomes even more vital. This week, I was finally able to find a place in my lesson planning that lent itself to watching some videos and eating some delicious, buttery popcorn. It was a total surprise to the students. When they walked in the room, they were shocked to see our brand new movie night set up along with freshly popped popcorn. School has been a very serious place lately while we try to make up the month that we missed of school along with only seeing our students half of the amount of time. The students were overwhelmed with gratitude when they found out everything that they were using that day was donated... "This is really all ours?" they asked. You should have seen their faces when I said "Yes!!!" Thank you so much for helping us in our time of need and giving the kids something positive to look forward to. They are so excited about the future. They are looking forward to helping me pick out movies for movie nights and bringing their whole families along to see all of our amazing donations. Thank you so much for making that possible.”

  • Mending the Sheldon Community - Hurricane Harvey Relief

    Funded Sep 12, 2017

It's a little cliche, but there is the old saying that when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. Even after completing my Donors Choose project, we were hit by more "bad" news. Our sister middle school was so damaged that we are having to share our campus, which meant for us that all of our district's middle school students would be having to split the school day. We see our students 2-3 days a week for about 60 minutes each session. All "extra" events during the day like pep rallies have been put on hold in order to keep students in their academic classes. What that meant is that our Family Movie Nights would have to be put on hold until second semester... But, seeing the silver lining, I have been able to utilize the materials from this project during the school day. This week, all AVID classes (about 300 students) watched our AVID tutorial videos with our Movie Night set up. It was a surprise, and they absolutely loved it. They were very impressed by the quality of the projector as well as the sound quality of the speakers. Their eyes lit up when they saw their giant 16 foot screen. They are already planning which movies they want to watch next semester. I cannot tell you how much we appreciate your thoughts and support during this difficult time. This project put huge smiles on all of my kids' faces. They were overwhelmed with excitement when they walked into the room. That alone was worth it. Again, thank you so very much for your kind donations for our oh-so-sweet students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Barnett

  • I Wish My Teacher Knew... Harvey Edition

    Funded Sep 26, 2017

I cannot explain in words what an incredible impact that this project had on my students. Hurricane Harvey was devastating to our school, but many of our students' homes were destroyed even worse. The hygiene bags provided my students who were in need with basic supplies to take care of themselves in addition to the school supplies that I was able to provide them. You did something for them that I could not... for that, I am so incredibly thankful. You provided two of our sweetest boys with shoes that they desperately needed. They have been wearing them so much! It makes my heart happy. Thank you for going above and beyond for all of my students. You made a direct impact on the lives of over 50 students. With your donation, you made them more confident and gave their parents the ability to shift their focus from meeting their children's basic needs to fixing their homes. You are truly heaven-sent.”

    With gratitude,

  • Two Schools, One Classroom

    Funded Sep 18, 2017

Thank you so much for your incredibly generous donations. Sharing a school was nothing that any of us could have imagined. Your donation has prevented possible conflicts that may have occurred and has made the transition so much easier. The students at both of our schools have been utilizing the materials that you have donated. The kids have really enjoyed the markers as many of ours have dried out. Also, the dry erase markers will have an even greater impact than we previously imagined. We have seven AVID teachers between our two campuses who will be utilizing the dry erase markers for our in-class AVID tutorials. All of the teachers were incredibly thankful, and it relieved a lot of stress. Your donations are used every day by all of our AVID students. Without you, our students may have been struggling while now they are excelling. I cannot tell you how thankful we are.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Barnett

I am one of the AVID elective teachers on my campus as well as the AVID Site Coordinator. AVID is a class, but it is also a schoolwide program that utilizes a curriculum based on an acronym called WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading). AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing ALL students for college readiness and success in a global society. My students tend to come from socio-economically disadvantaged families where they are the first in their family to go to college. My students truly are advancing via their individual determination.
