In the world of technology, my students yearn for instant gratification and are not always willing to open up a book in print. They have come accustomed to downloading an app, clicking submit and reading fiction that allows them to imagine but sometimes they need another viewpoint. We spend countless discussion time talking about the latest trend that they have seen on the Internet, heard from parents or that scrolled across their social media page. I want them to know and experience more authentically but also be a part of the conversation full of knowledge. Many of them can’t recall having to take books home and read from, yet alone watching a television show that catered to reading. I miss those moments that can make a child appreciate and value reading. With so many technology tools to choose from, our students are missing some basic skills that we need to learn how to recover. We should not wait until we know they are grade levels behind in order to make changes.
