My campus is comprised of 6th - 8th grade high poverty students who may not have a lot of parental support at home emphasizing reading and academics. We have a lot of second language learners as well. Many students come to the library and only ask about books based on movies or TV shows. They may not even visit the city's public library.
My students love the library because we make it a fun place to be, but you can see their demeanor change when it is time to roam and choose books. It is a challenge for many of them. They know how to use the online catalog to search for books and are able to go to the shelves and locate a book, but when they first sit down to type in the search box, many students simply sit and stare at the screen. It is even difficult to engage students in a conversation to find out what books appeal to them.
