  • Color Coded Genre Shelving in the Library

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

Thanks to your generous donations, our students are LOVING the brightness of the color coded shelving we have been able to provide in our library. One student said, "I really like the bright colors of the paper you put on the shelves, Mrs. Vaughan, it makes the library look less brown."

The colored paper on the back of the shelves and colored tape on the edges has helped to make an inviting environment for our students but has also helped them to find their books so much quicker and easier! Circulation has gone up from this time last year to this year, as students can find their favorite genre of book easily and check out on the fly between classes.

The genre color coded shelving has been so successful that we are considering doing something similar in the other sections such as non-fiction and biography.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Vaughan

  • Colorful Dynamic Shelving for Easy Book Browsing

    Funded Feb 14, 2024

I have begun papering the backs of the shelves and lining the edges with the painters tape in each of our fiction genre sections and already I have noticed a difference. Several students and many teachers have mentioned how bright and attractive the completed sections look. I have also observed students needing less time to browse the shelves for books in their favorite genres since the completed sections are so well marked and highlighted. This means students get the books they want, and get to class on time!

Our table covers and sign holders for our book display tables give our book displays a nice polished look and our visiting author was also impressed that she had such a professional looking table and display to autograph her books when she came to our campus for a visit.

None of these things would be possible without your kind and generous donations. Thank you again for your support of this project!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Vaughan

  • Unlock Learning in the Library

    Funded Sep 20, 2023

Thank you so very much for your contribution to my project Unlock Learning in the Library! My students absolutely love the Breakout Boxes and the learning activities we are able to do with them. My first class to come and give Breakout EDU a try was an 8th grade U.S. History class. I found a breakout activity on the U.S. Branches of Government. The teacher was so excited because checks and balances and branches of government was something her class had been struggling with.

The students were intrigued by the boxes with all the locks on them that they would have to find clues to unlock. As we got started with the activity, the students were a little apprehensive, but once they started to use their knowledge of the branches of government to figure out the clues to unlock the locks, they got so excited! They loved the competitiveness of the activity and I had students who do not regularly participate in traditional class discussions and lessons contributing ideas and excited to work with their teammates to solve clues.

Breakout EDU has been a great experience for the students and I am looking forward to trying some more Breakout EDU activities with other subjects and grade levels.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Vaughan

  • Engaging Activities in the Library

    Funded Jan 11, 2023

We are so very grateful for the new games and activities that we were able to purchase with your generous donations. We have a strong group of about 30 students that come into the library everyday before school and during lunch. The library is their calm and peaceful place where they can come start their day, or get away from the fray of the noisy cafeteria during lunch.

Our scholars were so excited to see the new games and activities out on the table for them when they came into the library! Once we put them out, they began to tell their friends about the new games, and to meet them in the library to play. The Jenga and Suspend games tend to be their favorites. We have several groups of students that will play a quick round of Uno or Connect Four before heading to class. This is such a great way for many of our students to begin their day in the morning before school.

Thank you again for your contributions to this project!”

  • Promoting a Culture of Reading through Project Lit Book Club

    Funded Jul 16, 2022

We launched our Project Lit Book Club Chapter in September and we have begun reading our first book Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam. It is a novel in verse and our students are discovering how much depth and complexity can be conveyed through poetry. Great discussions on several topics have come from reading and discussing this book together including the similarities and differences between public school and prison, the American legal system, policing in black communities, and family relationships. The students have loved the novel in verse format of this book and have been inspired to create some poems of their own.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Vaughan
