Flocabulary to the Rescue!
Funded Apr 10, 2019Thank you so much for your contribution to our class project! We were able to purchase a year subscription to Flocabulary and are loving the rhymes! We bust moves to our favorite tunes and play the lyric lab together as a class. Sometimes we compete in our classes to see which class can get the whole song completed! We are able to access the lyrics, handouts, and lyric notes so we can follow along as we learn Language Arts skills through raps and songs.
In our Language Arts class, we work on reading comprehension, writing, and vocabulary. These are all things we can use with Flocabulary and it helps to increase our knowledge in a fun way, and also help us remember the skills being taught.
We have several students who love to rap, and they are especially loving our Flocabulary lessons. Students are able to make their own beats and watch the videos on their own devices even when they are at home. It's so great to hear a student say, "I went home and showed my parents this song about making inferences!" With full access to Flocabulary, we are able to connect with students who might otherwise be hard to engage. Thank you again!”

Be Our Supply Superhero!
Funded Nov 27, 2018Thank you so much for your generous donation to our project! Our class have been crafting posters, flyers, and Language Arts projects with the use of the colored pencils, large post-it pads, and colored paper. The kids love to draw pictures and, even in 6th grade, it is easier for them to write about a subject if they can draw pictures to go with their writing. We have also been working on weathering and erosion in science and have used the notebooks to take notes, and the other supplies to show our thinking in science! The students especially love the small staplers. They now have a small stapler of their own at each table and the supply person at that table can be in charge of the stapler instead of them all waiting to use mine.
My students were thrilled when they saw the supplies! They immediately started filling up the small staplers and putting those at their tables. They cheered about the colored paper as we only had white paper before to use for class projects. We used the post-it pads that same day for a project!
Our class is now more than halfway through the school year so we are working on review projects and preparing for our state testing. I do anything I can to help make test prep more interesting and engaging, so having art supplies allows them to show their skills and knowledge of the material in an artistic, creative way, which they love! Thank you again!”

Steelpans To Grow Our Band!
Funded Aug 8, 2018Thank you so much for the contributions that helped us to purchase two new drums for our band! Our elementary steelband just started last year and is already up to 13 students. The students are thrilled to be able to learn a traditional island sound and tone on the steel drums, and the community loves being able to hear them play. They played two concerts for our school last year and look forward to doing even more this year.
We had our first rehearsal for the school year last Tuesday and I started with showing the band the boxes with the new pans and explaining how our project was funded. The students couldn't wait to open the boxes and get the new instruments put together! They all helped out and the new drums were up and running quickly! Everyone wanted to try out the new pans. I love how they come with the stand and mallets already so they are ready to be played instantly. Everyone practiced on them and we were able to start our first song for the year with the new instruments added to the band.
We will continue practicing every Tuesday this school year. We will learn about 4-5 songs and will be able to play them at several concerts throughout the school year for our school and local community. It is amazing to watch students who have never learned notes or played their own instrument learn to play a whole song. I love seeing how proud they are of themselves when they get to perform for others.
Thanks so much again for contributing to our project and to the continuing education in the arts!”

Hands-On STEM Resources!
Funded Aug 22, 2018Thank you so much for the STEM materials! We have already spent two class periods of Science opening and testing out all the amazing new stuff! We already have a puzzle mat holding our progress for students to work on the 1000 piece human body puzzle whenever they have a free minute. The two beach balls with questions about weather and the human body are also perfect for using in the last ten minutes of class after our lesson. Using these materials now helps students to be familiar with them when we use them during the units on weather and human body systems.
The class clapped and cheered when I revealed that our project was funded and showed them the new materials! They were so excited to start the puzzle and said, "How can we save our puzzle progress?" when it was time to clean up. The boys especially loved the beach balls and thought it was awesome that they could throw a ball to each other inside the classroom. Everybody had to take turns trying out the Newton's Cradle pendulum and testing it with letting go of a different amount of the metal balls at a time to see what would happen.
We are finishing up our first quarter of the school year in Science and finishing our individual science projects for the science fair in early October. Students have to complete a science project, make a display board and do a class presentation to share about their project. After the science fair, we will be starting on the human body and the organ systems. Students will make presentations on the different systems and present them to the class. The new resources we got will be incredibly helpful for this!
Thanks again for your support for my class and your encouragement of hands on STEM learning!”
