BLCPA Film & Theater
Funded Feb 24, 2014As we close out our school year, I am proud to say my students have produced the most amazing theater productions and videos our school has ever seen! The materials we purchased through your generosity have made students film and theater experiences more authentic and rewarding.
Students love to use the headphones to edit their movies, and it is even better that they can work in partners while the rest of the class is working on something else. They have produced amazing narrative films, abstract experimental videos, and documentaries. The videos they produced have been shown in the school art show and at school-wide assemblies.
Our school production of "Guys and Dolls" was a huge success. We used the stands to hold set pieces, and the lights helped us turn our gymnasium into a theater space. Without this equipment we would have had to do the play under the bright gym lights, and the performers and audience would have had completely different experiences. It helped the production feel more professional - which our students really deserved after all the hard work they had put in. The lights (literally and figuratively) helped their performances shine!
Finally, we appreciate your gifts even more, because we know we will be able to continue to use them next year as we expand our film program and put on two more plays!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Duggins
This classroom project was brought to life by 100 Women in Hedge Funds and 6 other donors.Bringing Math to Life!
Funded Sep 13, 2011As our first semester comes to a close I would like to thank all of you again for your generosity in helping my students. The projector we were able to purchase with your donations has had a tremendous impact on my classroom. My students have been able to learn not only what it means for shapes to be congruent, but WHY that is important by looking at pictures of airplanes and swing sets and discussing what would happen if the parts were not identical. Having the ability to put up examples, pictures, and videos has really helped students understand the math concepts I am teaching. My geometry students are particularly thankful not to have to look at my sorry drawings all the time!
Having this projector in class also makes it possible for me to cram a lot into a fifty minute block. Many of my students have very low basic math skills, and with the projector we are able to do a timed set of 10 "drill" questions every day on simplifying fractions or multiplication facts or another similar skill. Without the projector I would never be able to fit this remediation into my class along with the grade level content I need to teach. I have seen this daily practice dramatically improve the students comfort and confidence with these operations. They love to see how they improve as the week goes on; they may get only six right on Monday but by Friday they are able to answer nine or ten!
These are just a few of the many ways this projector has helped us, and I am sure I will continue to discover more exciting uses for it in the spring semester!
