The items in this project will enhance the school environment for the students in the intense support autism classroom by providing new items for use in the sensory room/classroom for sensory breaks. In addition, some items like the sensory strips and balls can be brought with the student to different places in the school.
It is important to understand sensory breaks are a designated portion of time that a student may have to deescalate from sensory stimulation of the classroom setting. Sensory breaks also are beneficial for students that need additional movement or deep pressure input opportunities to help with focus, attention, and learning.
In the daily classroom schedule students have scheduled times and can earn extra sensory room time to reinforce positive behavior, to access activities in the sensory room. These activities can be fine motor work bins (practice skills like writing, cutting and sorting), sensory input (trampoline, swing or light table) and quiet space (to calm down).
