Queens Gettin’ Lit! is an after school literacy program that exposes third through fifth grade students to diverse forms of literacy inspired by Black history and culture. Students in the program get an opportunity to read text like A Sweet Smell of Roses and I Love My Hair! to improve reading comprehension and writing skills through planned activities building skills such as synthesizing, analyzing and summarizing. As the program title states, students involved are empowered to see themselves as queens through their increased reading comprehension, vocabulary, and general learning (literacy). i.e. Lit. The term “lit” also serves a dual purpose. While the term “lit” is short for the word “literacy”, “lit” in popular culture also means: popular, hot, and the best. Research studies show that students’ reading and learning engagement improves when students are learning content that reflects themselves and their own experiences. Queens Gettin’ Lit! exposes girls to literacy content that reflects Black history and cultural experiences. Students also get to keep all of the books from the curriculum to add to their personal library at home.
