Fun FANTASTIC Readers!

Thank you again for providing our students with new, fun and interesting books. We have just completed our reading unit "Series Book Clubs" and because of your generous donations, ALL of my students were able to engage with the lessons of this unit. The books purchased were at the right level for my students which is crucial when doing the rigorous comprehension work necessary in 2nd grade. During this unit, readers become experts, reading multiple books in the series. By the end of our study, they were able to describe their characters, how books in the series follow a pattern, and fun things the author does with words and language.

One of my favorite things was seeing my students, who at times struggle with engagement, be excited to read more and more books in their series. They could not get enough of Pedro and Sofia Martinez and were constantly finishing books and picking out new ones. Sofia Martinez was especially engaging for my students with Spanish as their first language. Sofia Martinez includes words in Spanish throughout the text. When we read one of the books aloud as a class, my Spanish speakers got to be our resident "experts". They taught their peers what the words meant and helped teach me how to pronounce them. It was fun to model for my students even teachers need practice when learning new things! This experience has encouraged me to find more ways to highlight the special skill our bi-lingual students have. What a gift and all because you helped us purchase new books!
