The purpose of my project is to connect the concepts that we learn in class to the real-world topic of hydroponic gardening. Having not only hands-on activities but long-term hands-on activities in the classroom increase engagement and information retention as a whole.
My students live in an urban food desert. Rather than continuing to consume copious amounts of fast food from restaurants that are within walking distance of the school, they will be able to grow their own food that contains plenty of vitamins and minerals.
All the food produced from this garden will either be eaten by students directly or given to their families to use at home. In some cases, the fruit provided by this garden will be the first fruit some students will have ever tasted in their lives.
