My students live in a remote community outside of Homer Alaska which is only accessible by a winding switchback trail. In two aging buildings, we educate 57 students of every age. Life here is intrinsically connected to the weather. Winds and tides affect fishing. Rain, ice and snow impact whether or not the village is accessible. Families livelihood is connected to commercial fishing. Many of my students fish with their fathers and many high school students are preparing for careers in fishing when they finish their studies. Ours is a community of Russian Old Believers. Approximately 30 years ago, the village opened this school so that the children in the community could keep up with the rapid pace of change in the greater Alaskan community. As an educator, I find myself working to balance the traditional lifestyle that is so beautiful and important to the community with the demands of the school district, state standards, and wider community.
