Lifeskills Practice for Students with Multiple Disabilities

Funded Nov 24, 2013

I love seeing my student's excited each week for our cooking activities! Their faces light up at the beginning of the week as we prepare to shop for the ingredients we will use for our weekly cooking activity. At the beginning of the school year, we were limited in what we could make because we didn't have many supplies. Having things like our skillets, food processor, blender, cutting boards, and measuring cups has enabled my students to gain experience with and exposure to many different kitchen tools and types of food.

So far this year, my students have made many different recipes and food including Matzo Ball Soup, Coconut Cream Pie, Tacos, Fried Bananas, Pumpkin Soup, Black Bean and Corn Salad, Ginger and Garlic Green Beans, Hummus, Falafel. Our weekly cooking activities enable my students to practice their math skills and social skills as well as providing an engaging way to involve my students and extend lesson in social studies and ELA.

I love that my students are engaged and take ownership of their learning when we cook. I have my students social skills and math skills improve as well as their overall levels of independence and confidence in themselves and their abilities by participating in our cooking activities. I look forward to their continued growth as this year draws near to a close and look forward to continuing this activity and sharing these materials with future students at my school.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Ashley
