The sensory tools, positive reinforcers, and organizational items I am requesting will allow my special education students to learn in a positive social and emotional environment. The special lighting, flexible seating, calm down curtains and supplies will address individual accommodations for my students with sensitivity to fluorescent lights and sounds, hard plastic chairs and desks, and a need to disconnect. Using these items, I am able to teach students so that when they become overstimulated, there are alternatives and means to control their emotions. When students are able to self-regulate, accessing the curriculum is easy. Education is not always academics; it is also social and emotional. Exceptional learners access the curriculum while also being socially and emotionally aware of themselves and others.
