Very Important Visuals
Funded May 3, 2022Our students and staff very much appreciated the donations that led to the visual supports for our classroom. Two students utilized the visual toolkits and will benefit from these for behavioral and language support. These materials are durable and included Velcro as an added bonus!
My students just wrapped up their summer programming so they have a few weeks off before returning to the new school year! The rest of summer is sure to fly by but DonorsChoose always helps us get the classroom ready for all students.”

Funded Feb 14, 2022Our students received their materials very quickly! The air purifier was set up immediately. We had a discussion with the students about what an air purifier does and how it can help protect them. They all do well with wearing masks but this extra layer of protection will hopefully help many of them avoid illness and stay in school! The wet mop and solution is a great addition to our classroom as we practice life and functional skills. We cook every week in our classroom so messes are bound to happen! These materials help the students achieve new types of success. Thank you!”

Funded Oct 20, 2021Our students love these materials! We have used the Ninja Foodie so many times so far this year! Earlier this week, we used it to make tacos. For Thanksgiving, we used it to make mashed potatoes! The other materials have been put to use, too. The assessment record books have been used to record student assessment results - especially for our new sixth graders! The Plus Plus Construction set allows the students to practice an age-appropriate leisure skill. We use the set for various "challenges" and for the kids to just play with, in general. Thank you for your support!”

Evidence-Based Assessments for All
Funded Sep 16, 2021These materials have been essential to providing quality, individualized assessments for our students. Each student has unique needs which requires an assessment that is appropriate to them. These materials help the IEP teams use evidence-based methods for supporting each student and continue to teach students how to advocate for themselves efficiently and effectively. These materials should be in every classroom and we are so fortunate to be able to use them in ours! Thank you for all of your support!”

Funded Aug 19, 2021These materials bring so much joy to our classroom! They were selected to diversify the materials we currently had in the room. It is important for our students to practice the same skill different ways to ensure they will be successful when using that skill on their own. Providing them with new materials to use is a great way to test if their abilities are adaptable and flexible! We use the Magnet-Tiles to complete "building challenges" and the students love playing pretend with the Burger Sequencing!”

Funded Aug 19, 2021Our students' health and hygiene is in great hands - their own! These materials have been pivotal in allowing them to practice health and hygiene skills. They put on deodorant. They wash clothing. They practice washing their hair and bodies after attending swim class each week. The fitness materials are used for small and whole-group games to practice leisure skills and academic skills. The fitness materials fit so nicely on the large wire cart. It means so much to be able to supply our students with these materials to help them develop their health and hygiene skills.”

Funded Aug 31, 2021Our students utilize the financial literacy kit to explore career readiness and life skills. Middle schools is an important part of their educational journey. We visit the community a few times per month but the global pandemic has so seriously impacted their abilities to be successful in these settings. Going to grocery stores is more difficult now than three years ago. Many children need to wear masks. Others do not regularly go to the store anymore because of COVID-19. This financial literacy kit allows us to make simulations of stores in the classroom so students can practice shopping and other life and career skills.”

Funded Mar 6, 2019Our new resources were set up immediately upon arrival; a big thanks to our secretary and engineer for making this possible! One student stood in awe, staring at the machines that were taller than he was! We swim as a class once every week for gym; later this week we will continue our hands-on exploration and complete our first load of laundry! Some of the lessons will be whole group, some small, and others individual; the materials allow us to provide instruction at each student's level - a necessary key to success.
My students and staff applaud your support of our classroom, our school building. Some of the students haven't seen a washer and dryer and most haven't used them in their lives! After they were unboxed, we talked about the different parts and purposes of the materials. We linked their use to each child personally by discussing how laundry gets done in their homes or in the community. We explored the functions, smelled the laundry soap, and of course, talked about safety. Many students are so excited to have such an important job; in fact, they probably won't even notice all the important learning they're doing!
Our next step for these materials is to use them to the fullest extent. They will be used multiple times per week. I've already begun the search for donated uniforms for our students that do not have access to them. In addition to this, we have many other classroom supplies in need of washing - bodysocks, blankets, seat sacks, and more. We will learn to fold, sort by color, measure soap... there's so much to do! Thank you, again, for your continued support!”

Funded Jan 29, 2019We use our new materials every day. Students request to use the sit stool on a daily basis for work and for play. It's a great way for them to fidget appropriately during work tasks. The brick building table and building people were a fast favorite. Each day students build new creations by using their imaginations. Some students use the brick building table to practice appropriate play skills or social skills such as sharing. The Nuts About Sorting and Comparing Sizes activity sets are used as independent tasks or to continue pushing our skills further.
My students are thrilled with our new classroom additions! They hovered over me excitedly as I quickly assembled the Lego table and they got to creating right away. The students couldn't stop talking about how fun all of the new supplies were!
Each student in my room will continue to use the materials provided by the project for work and play purposes. We very recently just had a project funded for a washer and dryer, as well. The laundry supplies will be used by all five autistic support classrooms in our school building. These supplies will give us additional ways to practice important skills! Thank you so much for your continued support!”

AS (K-2) Kitchen For Learning
Funded May 2, 2014"Wow! There's a kitchen in the classroom!" a student exclaimed, as two of his peers rushed to the new materials. "Ms. C, look!" another said while pointing. Put simply, the AS (K-2) Kitchen for Learning has been a big success! Within minutes, students (and staff!) were asking to explore the materials. "I see foods. I want play foods, please!" It was a language and learning explosion!
Still today, it is inspiring to see the opportunities the new materials have given our students. They sort the foods and dishes by category, put away the groceries, and absolutely love to go shopping! They talk, pretend, and share. They "make" and "bake" cookies and pizza, then, offer a sample to their teachers and friends. "Put the dishes in the sink," a teacher asked a student, "Great! Now, pretend you're washing dishes!"
Since its arrival, this project has been an essential tool for teaching and learning in our classroom. Now, our staff members are able to provide highly-specialized, realistic and imaginative instruction. We practice turn taking, reciprocity (i.e. social exchanges between two people) and much more; not to mention, the language opportunities for students are endless. These materials have allowed our students work on a variety of skills in a motivating and effective way; they are a treasured tool that facilitates learning in all of our students! Words hardly do justice to the thanks we owe our invaluable donors. Thank you, again!”
