Virtual reality is the next best thing to actually being present. Technology is now firmly rooted in the education environment. The headsets would provide multi-sensory learning experiences which foster innovation, communication, collaboration, and creativity skills. The virtual reality headsets would be used throughout the entire school year for any learning experiences/activities that would tie into the curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to go on virtual field trips and examine areas and events that would be unavailable to them by any other means. Students with disabilities will be able to participate in experiments or learning environments that are not possible in the real world. During our unit on community, students will take on the role of a person from different cultures and travel to their countries and experience their customs first hand. Finally, students will gain new perspectives. For example, students will walk through a water molecule, explore it in detail and become familiar with its parts. The impact of this grant would be astronomical for our students. The student needs driving this grant is the fact that our students lack experience and the means to gain that experience. We can ask our students to research and Google ancient civilizations; however, what an experience it would be for our students to actually be walking around Mesopotamia and witness the earliest cities being built! Students could travel to the depths of the ocean and swim alongside anglerfish all while learning about habitats. Virtual reality motivates students and encourages active participation. It offers the possibility of learning to be tailored to learners’ characteristics and personal needs.
