  • It's All Fun and Games!

    Funded Feb 27, 2013

Thank you all so much for your generous donations to my classroom. Most years, when students return from Spring Break, they are slow to get back into their work. This year, when they returned, they found a whole shelf full of new and exciting language works and games! They eagerly explored these new items and have enjoyed learning with them all spring.

They love the humorous illustrations on the word cards and have fun making up their own sentences and illustrations to show their understanding of homophones, multiple meaning words, idioms, similes, and metaphors. We have turned the context clues cards into a two person game which is a treat they may choose when they have finished their independent work. The final weeks of school will be filled with Reader's Theater plays to practice reading fluency while entertaining each other.

Thanks again for your donations. They have brought much joy and learning to our class.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cole

  • Healthy Bodies, Healthy Friendships!

    Funded Oct 25, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous gift providing our class with P.E. equipment. My students have fun with these items everyday, rain or shine. We have built obstacle courses, played team and cooperative games, held relay races and just played freely. It is wonderful to watch the students, of various ages and abilities, make up their own games, negotiate rules and turns, cooperate, and help each other learn new skills. Thank you again for your contribution to the physical and emotional well being of these students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cole

  • Finding Our Place

    Funded Oct 7, 2012

Thank you so much for your contributions to my students' learning! It is wonderful to watch the sparks of imagination as children learn about the world. While researching, students discuss their plans of world travel or becoming scientists to explore the rain forests or coral reefs. They gladly stretch their reading ability when a book holds their interest and enjoying writing and sharing reports of their new knowledge. Thank you again for contributing to future scientists, environmentalists, explorers, linguists, and travelers!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cole

  • Express Yourself 2!

    Funded Sep 28, 2012

Thank you so much for the art supplies for my classroom. My students have enjoyed them tremendously and learned a lot while doing so. One of their favorite activities is "doing research." They read a non-fiction book of their choice, and use art and writing to show what they have learned from it. It is amazing to see children who are beginning readers striving to read books that are difficult for them, working with peers for help, and excitedly discussing what they have learned and how they will show it. Without the art materials, this activity would be dull and students would say it is "€œtoo hard!"€ With the addition of art, they are pushing themselves, improving their reading comprehension, decoding and writing skills, increasing their vocabulary and doing it happily! Thank you again for you generous support of education in Mississippi.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cole

  • Express Yourself!

    Funded Jul 12, 2012

Thank you again for your generous donation to my classroom. I cannot tell you how much my students have enjoyed these resources! They think they are "doing art" when really they are learning important concepts across the curriculum. In geometry lessons, we have built three-dimensional shapes from construction paper giving children a concrete understanding of plane figures creating solid figures. In geography, we have traced, cut, painted and glued to make paper globes while learning about continents and oceans. Students have written poems, paragraphs and short stories and published them in creative ways.

We have also used these materials at our 'peace table.' Students may choose to go to the peace table whenever they are feeling unhappy or angry. We keep art and writing materials there for students to draw or write about their feelings and the situation which caused them to feel that way or to write a note of apology to a friend after a disagreement.

As you know, schools are cutting budgets and funding only the basics. Thanks to donors like you, our schools can go beyond the basics to provide a well rounded education!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cole

I teach in a public Montessori school in an urban setting. My students are bussed in from all over the city, meaning we have a wide mix of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. I have 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade children in about equal numbers. We work together to create a learning environment that feels like a family, with older children acting as guides and mentors for the younger ones. Children stay with me for all three grades, so they get a chance to grow and learn together, become leaders, then move on to new challenges in the 4th - 6th grade classes.
