Funded Aug 14, 2024Thank you for making our project, Diverse English and Spanish Books to Inspire Young Minds, a reality! With your support, we've transformed our classroom into a vibrant reading haven where my 2nd graders are exploring stories in both English and Spanish. These new books are doing more than just filling our shelves—they're enriching my students' literacy journey and fostering critical reading skills.
In our classroom, reading is an interactive experience. Students engage with these texts by practicing fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, all while connecting with relatable characters and stories. The Little Critter and Amelia Bedelia books, for example, teach sequencing and cause-and-effect skills, while the Spanish for Kids Readers help strengthen their bilingual abilities. Reading is a mix of independent exploration, guided group discussions, and one-on-one support, and these books are providing the variety my students need to grow as confident, joyful readers.
I have a few students who especially light up when reading these new books. One student, who struggled to find joy in reading, now eagerly grabs a Pete the Cat book each day, and another bilingual student takes pride in reading the Spanish for Kids Readers aloud to classmates. These books are creating moments of excitement and discovery for my students, and it's all thanks to your generosity!”
With gratitude,
Ms. A. Castro
