In a school with a new ESL program, we are seeking to build a library of books that relate not only to American culture but also give a reflection of the diverse student body we serve. With nearly 100 ESL students, we have a representation of 11 different languages and many more countries. We need these books to make deeper learning connections between cultures as our students are making gains in their own language development.
Our students need to see themselves and find comfort and familiarity within the context of their American education. Having access to these resources, will provide that comfort.
We are requesting a library of 50 books that cover topics such as diversity and immigration and that represent the various cultures of our students. We will use these books to guide reading and writing lessons in the classroom. We will also make the library available to homeroom teachers who may be struggling with issues of inclusion.
Thank you so much for your support of my ESL classroom!
