A study conducted by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (2008) emphasizes the importance of focused, explicit, and targeted routines when teaching social-emotional skills. An essential skill for my students is how to breathe in a mindful and purposeful way. Does this seem like something they may already know? Or, on the surface, something we’re doing all day anyway? But under crisis or times of stress, breathing becomes irregular and loses its pattern. Using skills and strategies taught with yoga and the visual component of Hoberman spheres can give students assistance to regulate their breathing and/or calm down in times of distress. My hope is that they use the techniques we work on together and transfer them to independent practice outside of school, too. The benefits of SEL are numerous! Some of the benefits include positive social-behaviors, fewer disciplinary referrals, less emotional distress, and improved grades (Penn State, 2017). When we are breathing mindfully, we are able to access our prefrontal cortex where our decision-making skills are located. Allowing my students to have access to a positive outlet for emotions and breathing techniques is sure to become well-loved in my classroom.
