My students' growing bodies need to move and be active during the day as we stretch and build our minds. We have a restricted space to learn in, but over the years I have observed that my nine and ten-year olds enjoy reading and working around my room. This means they are not necessarily sitting in a chair or at a desk all day, but allowed to move about, sit on the floor, stand at a table, or sit in a variety of other positions.
My students prefer working around the room on a variety of furniture versus sitting at a desk confined to a stiff chair. They find it more comfortable to work in a variety of positions. In my classroom, I currently have twenty-five standard chairs, two bean bags, six stools, and one prized fitness ball, which my students enjoy using on a daily basis as they collaborate and grow their minds. The additional wobbly chairs, fitness balls, and balance disks will allow my students to have safe physical movement with core physical engagement while promoting the ability to work at tables, desks, or around the room to collaborate with their peers. These items will provide my students with variety and choices of furniture, which will help them refine their preferred learning style and help prepare them for a changing world as many office spaces in the work force have removed cubicles and desks for more collaborative and comfortable furniture.
With this furniture, I will be able to give all of my students’ opportunities to engage their bodies as they grow and build their minds.
