  • 1st Grade Happy Campers Seek Book Adventures!

    Funded Jan 1, 2018

Well, we have had quite an exciting Winter semester with our new books! The boys and girls have been loving exploring the titles and reading independently as well as with a partner. The large selection of non-fiction books has helped us add to our topic research and excitement for learning new information. The books have served as models for writing projects. The volume of the writing has improved tremendously! The quality of their content has not only surprised me but they have surprised themselves!

During reading workshop, we are working to increase the minutes that students spend engaged in reading books. The students spend the hour involved in small group, independent and partner work. A small number of students have been able to maintain and even increase their engagement for the whole hour! They have modeled independent reading skills for their peers and continue to make steady progress.

In the next couple of months our class will keep working hard to practice reading strategies. Keep checking in with us to see how we are doing! In our classroom we recognize kindness, compassion and empathy. YOU have certainly shown us a perfect example! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rosado

Reading is out of this world for our new First Graders! The students say reading is a blast and exploring books is a favorite activity. Our school is setting new literary dispositions this year with a central focus on Reading Engagement. An engaged reader is one who not only looks at books but can see the potential in each story. An engaged reader uses their choice of books to make connections to their lives, for entertainment and enjoyment, to learn something new, inspire peer partner conversations, grow their vocabulary with meaningful words, to review/practice old and new skills, just to name a few! By fulfilling our classroom projects, you will be providing more choices in supporting our daily reading skills practice. You will be giving my students a chance to explore new titles, practice applying new skills and feel that excitement around book discoveries all while becoming better readers.
