  • A Home for Fitness Equipment

    Funded Jan 22, 2025

Thank you so much for your generous donations in helping us purchase storage cabinets. The cabinets helped us clear up space in out fitness center and organize our equipment. Organizing the equipment and storing them in a safe space helps with the longevity of the equipment.

Our students were excited when the cabinets arrived. They offered to help build the cabinets. They also appreciate the extra space they have in the fitness center to work out. This is especially helpful with out large class sizes.

Thank you again for your kindness and generosity.”

  • Fitness with a Punch

    Funded Sep 30, 2024

Thank you so much for helping us fund our Fitness with a Punch Project! The students were so excited when they saw the boxing gloves, punch mitts, and hand wraps. They wanted to start boxing right away.

The first day we used the boxing equipment, they learned how to safely wrap their hands to prevent injuries, the 6 types of punches by name and number, how to move and block. Before having this equipment, we would spend only about one week on the combatives Physical Education requirement. Now, my students are constantly asking when they get to box again. We are now adding at least one day of boxing each week to give them a fun alternative to their regular cardio days. The kids who don't like to run or sweat, are fully engaged and sweating on our boxing days.

Combatives is a PE 2 requirement, but with this equipment all of my other grade levels are also participating in boxing because they hear from their peers what they get to do in class. My softball class also enjoys a break from their practice when they get to box. They have so much fun, elevate their heart rates, and relieve some stress.

Thank you all again for your kindness and generosity. Any time we can give our students opportunities to engage in activities that bring them joy increases their likelihood of finding activities for lifelong fitness. Thank you!”

  • Technology for Physical Education

    Funded Oct 14, 2023

Thank you all so much for donating to help fund the new tv for our PE students. Teaching lessons in PE where we incorporate technology has been a struggle, whether it is showing videos, doing interactive lessons for units such as dance, swim or combatives, or just displaying a powerpoint presentation. In our gym, the lights do not shut off, so when we use the projector, the kids cannot see the screen because of the lighting. We brought an old tv from home to alleviate this issue. The students were able to see the lessons on the screen, but trying to huddle over 50 students around a 32 inch screen added another struggle. Many of our student do not like to wear their glasses, so it makes it hard to see; however, even our students with 20/20 vision had difficulties reading the screen.

The 75 inch screen tv with a mobile stand has been a lifesaver. Our students are able to spread out in the gym to engage with our lessons. We are even able to have multiple classes in the gym doing lessons together. We just finished our dance unit, and our students love the just dance videos. We are also able to share the TV with our sports teams so they can watch game film. We are so excited for next semester for our dry lad aquatics unit as well as playing interactive fitness games, including races in our fitness center with our spin bikes. We can also now add a separate station of a spin class while we are in the fitness center. One teacher with around 50 students makes it difficult to instruct one station while supervising the other fitness stations. However, we can now display a spin class for the students to follow along with.

Thank you all so much. Your generosity and understanding of our students needs is already enhancing our lessons and will provide better and more engaging lessons.”

  • Getting Stronger Together Apart

    Funded Sep 9, 2020

Thank you all so much for your kind donations that allowed us to get resistance bands. This school year has been very interesting and challenging with distance learning. Your generous donations allowed me to provide resistance training bands to my student-athletes to continue to strength train while at home. We use the bands during our zoom workouts, which has allowed for a wider variety of workouts in whatever space the students have at home. We were also able to use the bands for the short period of time in which the district allowed us to conduct in-person athletic conditioning.

The students were so excited when we opened the packages of resistance bands. I kept updating the students about the progress of the project since the proposal was launched on DonorsChoose.com. They were in awe at how fast people contributed to the project. We did the package opening on zoom, since we could not meet in person. They students were able to pick up their resistance bands from school to use at home. We had been using random items as weights at home, such as water bottles or books. My softball players were really excited because they love using the bands to warm up their shoulders for throwing and can use the bands to add resistance to their swing in addition to other strength training exercises.

Currently, I have been trying to keep my student-athletes optimistic and positive about being able to have a volleyball and softball season this year. With the pandemic, there are a lot of uncertainties. We continue to conduct virtual practices. For a short period of time, we were able to condition in person. We are hoping to be able to at least participate in conditioning on campus when the semester begins. We just want to make sure whether we have a season or not, we still continue to help our students develop their skills and participate in a team atmosphere.

Again, thank you for helping us fund this project. My students and I greatly appreciate your generosity.”

  • Loving Lacrosse

    Funded Oct 6, 2016

My PE students were so excited to receive the new lacrosse equipment. They were all eager to use the lacrosse sticks, balls and pop-up goals. They were even more excited that they could now play the sport which they have been begging me to play since the beginning of the school year with equipment that belongs to their school because we had to borrow lacrosse equipment from another high school last year.

Since receiving the lacrosse equipment, my classes have been able to practice fine motor skills, such as throwing, catching, and scooping. Our skills practices during the PE unit are more efficient, as there is now enough lacrosse sticks and balls for all of my students. There is more time for the students to perfect their lacrosse skills since they do not have to share equipment during the class period. With the pop-up goals, the students are given a better target to shoot their goals rather than using cones.

During the Spring semester, we are planning on having multiple lacrosse tournaments during our PE class periods. With the new equipment and pop-up goals, we can play several games at a time. This also allows for maximum participation during the class period. Lacrosse provides a great aerobic workout for all of our students. Thanks to your contributions, we are headed in the right direction. Thanks again so much! Our students really appreciate your assistance.”

  • Helmets for Hits, Protect the Plate

    Funded Aug 23, 2016

    Dear Donors,

My softball team was so excited to receive the new softball equipment. They were all eager to try on the helmets and the catcher's gear. They were even more excited that they could now take batting practice off of the pitching machine.

Since receiving the helmets and catcher's gear, my athletes use the equipment on a daily basis at practice. Our practices are more efficient, as multiple catchers can suit up and work with our pitchers. Our batters and base runners are now able to wear helmets that fit their heads. The helmets that we were using prior to this shipment were either too big or too small.

We are currently preparing for the upcoming spring season. We have a long way to go, but our players are making great strides. We hope to be more competitive in our league this season. The athletes have a goal to make playoffs this year. Thanks to your contributions, we are headed in the right direction. Thanks again so much! Our players really appreciate your assistance.”

My softball team is in need of protective equipment, such as batting helmets and catcher's gear for the upcoming season. We are a low-income, inner-city high school and would like to provide as many student-athletes the opportunity to participate in athletics without financial worries. Softball is an expensive sport to play because of all of the equipment and protective gear necessary to participate. Many of our students are unable to join organized sports because of the financial burdens. Organized sports are a great outlet for our students to be positive and productive members of the community. Our student-athletes take pride in wearing their team uniforms, and it is a great motivation for them to do well academically. By providing the students with the basic equipment necessary to play softball, I believe more students will be encouraged to take part in high school athletics.
