My students come from low-income homes, and the majority live in crowded apartments. Our school is one of five elementary schools, which are all located within a one square mile area, with gang and drug problems. Many students are struggling readers who are 2-3 grade levels behind. Schools are a safe place for our students, and we strive to make them not only educated, responsible individuals, but also caring citizens. My students are important, and I want them to know that they can make a difference in their lives and in the lives of others. I know because I am a product of this community.
