  • South Carolina Young Adult Book Award Nominees 2009-2010

    Funded Aug 20, 2009

I wish you could have seen my students' faces when I opened the box of new books. I had to keep an eye on everyone to ensure they didn't take a book from class before all of my students had a chance to see them. Every book except one has a waiting list; several books have a waiting list of over twenty students, so I am hoping to get more copies of those titles. The most popular title is City of Bones; I am hoping to read that one soon. Since a student always has it checked out, I have been unable to read it. Even the local libraries' copies are checked out!

I deeply appreciate the money you donated so my students could read these books. My students repeatedly asked, "You mean, these people just gave money so we could get these books? Do they know us?" When I said "no," they were impressed. Please know that your money is reinforcing a love of reading with my students. Each time someone reads a book, she or he recommends it to others.

Again, I am thankful that you provided these books for my students. They are asking for more reading time because they are interested in their books. Those are beautiful words in an English teacher's ears.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hardwick-Ivey

  • What in the World Are You Reading--Middle Eastern Literature

    Funded Dec 28, 2008

Thank you so much for funding my "What in the World Are You Reading-- Middle Eastern Literature" grant. I am thrilled to know these books will be arriving in my class soon. I can already imagine how excited my students will be to receive new books, and I know there will be a waiting list to read them. Last week, I was revising the novel unit, and I was worried that my students would not have access to books about the Middle East. Your generosity came just in time. Thank you again for your support”

  • Fun Reads for My Teen ESL (Spanish) Students

    Funded Dec 16, 2008

I cannot begin to explain how excited I am that my project has been funded! I never dreamed that I would receive these books so quickly! The timing is perfect because the students now have time to change books before their midterms. Thank you so much for ensuring that my Spanish-speaking students can now read for pleasure. They will definitely be more successful in reaching the school's goal of reading 10 books in English”

  • What in the World Are You Reading? (Latino Literature)

    Funded Jun 19, 2008

Thank you so much for funding my Latino literature unit. I am more excited than you can imagine. My students really enjoy Julia Alvarez and Isabel Allende, so I am really excited to introduce them to other authors they may enjoy. I work hard to introduce my students to authors and books they'll find rewarding. Through your generosity, my job will be easier in the fall.

    Sincerely,

    Amy ”

  • What in the World Are You Reading? (Asian Literature)

    Funded May 6, 2008

Thank you so much for funding my "What in the World Are you Reading? (Asian Literature)" grant. I was ecstatic to see my students and I will receive these books in the fall. In recent years, students have become more interested in Asian literature, and I don't have many copies of these books. I know these books will be a wonderful asset to my classroom library. This year, I had several students who wanted to read these titles, but the local libraries didn't have editions. I am thrilled to know students can read them next year.

    Sincerely,

    Amy ”

  • Picture Books for Teenagers

    Funded Mar 13, 2008

Every day, I log on to the DonorsChoose website to check the status of my proposal. Every day, I saw there was no funding. I was beginning to lose hope that I receive copies of my books. Therefore, I was happy-- no, make that ecstatic-- when I received notification today that my wish had been granted. It took a lot of effort not to do a happy dance in the middle of class!

Thank you so much for participating in DonorsChoose. Your generosity means the world to me and my students. I can't wait for my new books to be delivered.

    Sincerely,

    Amy ”

  • Quit Stealing My Books!

    Funded Nov 5, 2007

Thank you so much for funding my literacy grant. School has been in session only nine-weeks, and my students are already asking for more books. Most of the books they’re requesting are the ones listed in my grant. I am elated that I’m getting more books for them since I’ve already spent the money the school gave me. I’ve been trying to find books for my students at yard sales. They’re going to love getting “pretty, new” books. There’s something for all of my students with this grant. I posted my grant in April, so I was beginning to believe I wasn’t going to receive funding. I was ecstatic when I went to DonorsChoose.org and saw the word “funded.” My colleagues were hugging me in the hall. Thank you again for your donation. I know it will benefit my students”

    With gratitude,
