There are dozens of programs available to support students to learn English. Many of these are available for free, like Newsela and GoogleVoice, while other programs come at a cost. Our school fortunately, received a grant for an online learning platform, Achieve 3000. Achieve provides each student with an individualized reading account, allowing them to access content at their specific reading level. Because we have students in our classrooms who are barely speaking English to others who are reading at a 6th grade level, a program like Achieve allows all of our students to have access to reading material at their challenge level. Unfortunately, we don't have consistent access to computers for our students to take advantage of all of this useful online software. Currently, we share one set of computer with the whole ESL team. It would really benefit our 9th-10th grade ELA/Humanities students to have consistent access to computers. This cart is just the first step. After we get this cart, we hope to get a class set of 24 computers. There are so many ways we plan on using these. On many days, you will see students responding to each other's writing using Google Classroom. Many of our students are shy to speak English; being able to converse in writing launches them into having small group and whole class conversations. On other days, we might share the computers between our three ESL Humanities classrooms. Groups of students might work independently on their Achieve 3000 reading accounts while teachers have writing conferences with other students. Often Chromebooks will be available to students to do extension vocabulary and grammar work on sites such as Vocabulary.com and Quill.org. Because we serve such a heterogenous group of students, having computers will really help us differentiate our lessons.
