My students are 7th graders at a Title I public charter school in Philadelphia. Independent reading is a beloved part of the English Language Arts classroom at my school. Overall, my students love time spent in class curling up with a book - most even beg for more when it is time to move on to the next lesson! However, for those students who have not yet developed the skills they need to locate books they enjoy, or maintain their reading stamina on their own, independent reading time can feel stressful and also boring. I'm hoping that by engaging reluctant readers with access to new, popular series, and books that are full of action, adventure, and drama I can help point my most reluctant readers towards the "good books" on our classroom shelves.
