I would like my students to experience dissection and become more interested in the field of science through hands on activities! Suburban students in the same grade/age group have had these experiences and I would like to ensure that there is equity in the field of science by offering these experiences to urban, minority students in order to increase their curiosity! Starting with owl pellets is a great first step before engaging in major dissections. The dissection mats will help to guide students through what they are seeing as well so they can begin learning to evaluate their findings. The field of science needs more students of color and students with urban backgrounds in order to fuel the future; this is just one step in the journey! We are lucky to have an enrichment period every Friday where students can choose what activity to participate in. We don't currently have a science offering, but it has been requested by many students and I hope to start with owl pellets. If possible I would like to later move on to additional dissections such as brains, hearts, and fetal pigs (pending funding of course).
