My students are 6th to 8th-grade Mandarin Chinese Immersion learners. With Chinese New Year fast approaching, I am planning a project focused on shadow puppetry. Through this project, I will use puppetry to tell stories about Chinese traditions and cultural celebrations. While traditional shadow puppets are made from cowhide, I will teach my students how to create puppet characters using plastic sheets and thermal transparency films printed with a color printer. To ensure the characters have the necessary thickness, we will laminate them. The puppets will be manipulated with specially designed sticks. We will then use a self-made shadow puppet theater with a fabric screen. When the puppets are held against the screen, they will come alive through the use of special lighting, sound, and visual effects, creating an engaging experience for the audience.
