Our school is very diverse and high poverty. That doesn't mean we are low-performing, however. Our Comic Book Club serves as a creative outlet for students to express themselves in a visual medium that continues to grow in relevance with 21st century literacy. Students in our Comic Book Club are a community of visual storytellers who have the opportunity to share their work both locally and on the worldwide web. We tend to attract students who don't necessarily 'fit in' with their peers during the regular school day, but after school they are in an environment where they can feel accepted and comfortable to be who they are. We also provide students with a snack, and the county provides late buses for students without transportation, so this is one of few opportunities a high-poverty student may get to participate in an after-school activity. Two autistic students also attend our club, and it is one of the few opportunities they have to socialize with non-autistic peers at school.
