  • Circulating Our Ideas

    Funded Dec 28, 2011

Your gift has enabled my students to access to the Internet and print out information. We did an extensive unit on biographies. The students read five or six biographies. They then chose one individual for whom they wanted to find out more. Using our one classroom computer, the students took turns using the internet and then printing out information. They also wrote extensive reports on these individuals which were also printed thanks to our wonderful printer that your generous gifts allowed us to have.

The students did three more writing pieces, each of which was then printed out, again thanks to the printer. We also created a class book of poems that we were able to make multiple copies of. These were distributed to the students' families and to other classes.

Because the students were able to see their words in print, they were much engaged in their writing and were most motivated to do additional writing in the classroom and on their own. Your gift also gave us much needed wipe off boards, where the students practiced cursive writing, multiplication and a variety of other skills.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chikofsky

  • Reflective Reading: The Five Essentials of Fiction

    Funded Dec 30, 2011

The impact of the two novels the students read, Because of Winn Dixie and My Name is Maria Isabel is very large and long lasting. In both books, there is a strong main character that the students were able to connect with. They were able to have in depth discussions as to the traits of the characters, their actions and the ultimate outcomes of the books. In addition, the students were able to write five paragraph essays on various topics connected to these two novels.

The students are eager to read additional books by these two authors and have looked for additional titles at the public library.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chikofsky

My third grade students come from diverse ethnic and racial groups. More than sixteen languages are spoken at my school. Their families are mostly newly arrived immigrants and speak little or no English at home. They have rich cultural backgrounds which they share eagerly with their classmates. We celebrate their varied cultures with music, dance, prose and food. In class, where English is spoken, the students have opportunities to communicate with each other both verbally and through writing. The students do a great deal of group work, where their ethnic differences matter not. The students are highly motivated and quite enthusiastic.
