  • Encourage Students to Read with Comic Book Club!

    Funded Dec 20, 2024

Thanks to your generous donations, scholars in Comic Book Club have been eagerly reading and creating for the past two months! We do not have a functioning library in our school, and many of our students do not have transportation to easily get to the public library. The books we are able to offer through Comic Book Club are books scholars are eager to read. By providing books that students are excited about, their interest in reading is piqued. Comics, manga, and graphic novels, all of which we have been able to provide scholars, are often more approachable for students for whom reading is a challenge. Students have expressed to me that the often already familiar plot lines and the illustrations help them to understand the text. By using these context clues, scholars are also developing important strategies to help them read more and more complex material.

We are not just voracious readers in Comic Book Club. Many students are also eager to use the materials provided in club to create their own comics. By referencing other books, students have learned about creating a story line, writing using dialogue, and they have developed their drawing skills. Many students in Comic Book Club have never had an art class offered through their school, and so Comic Book Club has become a space for students to really delve into their creative passions. We have learned about perspective drawing, shading to create depth, and how to use our own bodies as reference when trying to draw characters in action! We even practiced binding our own books using yarn and a hole punch.

Scholars love Comic Book Club so much that we are now meeting multiple times a week, and we have over ten scholars participating every week! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity. We could not do this without your support, and I hope to continue to provide a space where students can read, draw, and share their joy in these activities with their peers.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Zoe

  • More Books for Comic Club!

Comic Club is so grateful for the ability to continue to get new books and materials! Thanks to your support, we can get the next books in students' favorite series keeping them engaged and excited to read. Students have also been making their own comics, and thanks to the art materials we've been able to provide, they're turning their sketches and storyboards into small books. They're already pla”
