Tech Savvy Second Graders
Funded Aug 13, 2018Words cannot describe how thankful I am that you took the time to read through my project and decide to donate to my classroom. My students were so excited to get the computers to make our classroom a 1-to-1 classroom! We are one of the only 2nd grade classrooms at my school to have this distinction. Many of my students do not have a computer at home, so having access to one each day in the classroom ensures that they are able to complete their online assignments each week.
I think the most exciting part to them was the feeling of "ownership". Being able to call the Chromebook theirs and having their name labeled on the top has given them such a since of pride!”

Wobble While You Work!
Funded Feb 21, 2018I am so very thankful that you decided to help fund my project for wobble chairs. As a teacher who believes in alternative seating, I knew I needed the option for those kids who just need to wiggle while they complete their work. These chairs do just that! I have had many comments from both children and parents that these chairs have made a world of difference in the classroom, and I knew that it would! Not all kiddos today can function sitting in a desk, confined to one spot. These chairs have truly opened the door for movement while learning!”

Funded Mar 27, 2018Thank you so much for helping out my classroom with the purchase of a class set of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Author studies are a great way to encourage students to start reading chapter books, and I always enjoy introducing my students each year to the wonderful imagination of Roald Dahl! He truly was an amazing author and has left so many wonderful tales for young and old to enjoy! When students see that teachers love books and specific authors, it really does help create that everlasting love for reading. We read daily in my room, either to self, with friends, or just listening to me read aloud. Literacy is important - and I hope my students always remember reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Mrs. Everitt!”

Fantastic Reading With Mr. Fox
Funded Nov 9, 2017There is something about 2nd grade that has students so interested in reading chapter books. However, many students are so scared to take up the challenge of picking one and reading it completely. Most end up quitting a few chapters in because there are no pictures, or the wording and sentence structure is just a little too hard. Having class sets of books allows me to read with the students, demonstrating how to change my voice for different characters and how to pause in certain places. The students read along with me, so they feel that they are in control of the read themselves. We read a lot in my classroom, and I owe this reading time to the growth my students show in progress monitoring throughout the year. It seems that the more I read with them, the more confidence they have to take on harder books themselves. I am so excited to share my love of Roald Dahl with my students, and thank my donors so much for making this dream a reality!”

Funded Aug 8, 2016I am still completely overwhelmed by your generosity! My students were so excited when I opened up the package and unveiled all of the wonderful non-fiction books! Even better, we were just beginning our Space unit, and two of the books in the box revolved around space aspects! Perfect timing!
My students love reading non-fiction! There are such curious little creatures who love to ask questions and then go find books or other materials to look for the answers. These books have opened up so many opportunities for my thinkers to dive into books and soak up all of the information provided. They are so eager to share their learning with me and their peers.
These books will be treasured in my classroom for many years to come! Thank you so much for offering your help to get my classroom the materials that it needed to make my students successful this year and for years to come!”

Funded Mar 21, 2015Words cannot express just exactly how much my students have enjoyed reading all of the books that you helped fund for my classroom! I wish you could have seen their eyes when I started pulling the books out of the package - I pulled one book out at a time, reading the title and author, and each time I pulled a book out they would "ooo" and "ahhh". As soon as I had them out and ready for readers, these books were chosen!
Each day I have a "read to self" center, where the students are able to browse through my classroom library and choose 2-3 books to read to themselves and sometimes with a buddy. Over the course of a few months, almost all my books have been read and re-read by my students, so having new choices to read really helped boost the excitement for this center! Having more books to choose from, that are written on a first grade reading level ensured that students were able to read independently and fluently. I have noticed a huge increase of the students wanting to read in their spare time so that they can finish the books they start during centers and have even had a few that wanted to brave reading a chapter book. I have been so amazed by their determination to finish a book and had an average independent reading level growth of 5 levels over the course of the year! Thanks again for being a part of my students' learning this year!”

Little Learners Love to Read
Funded Oct 18, 2014I wish you could have seen the look on my students' faces when my package arrived with all our new classroom books! They were, and still are, so excited to be able to choose from so many books to read during independent reading centers. Several were so excited to have chapter books available to read, and others were happy to see familiar faces, such as Clifford the Big Red Dog and Pete the Cat.
These books are being used everyday in my classroom. Center groups rotate in and out of what I have named "Read to Self", where they pick 2-3 books and find a quiet place in the classroom and read. Now they might not know every word in the books, but I watch them work very hard using the decoding skills they have learned to try and figure out unknown words. They amaze me sometimes with how smart they are!
Having access to these books has boosted my students' reading levels and universal screener scores. Over 75% of my students saw growth of more than 25 points, and 40% grew more than 100 points! I know wholeheartedly that this can be attributed to having an awesome classroom library with vocabulary-rich books to choose from. You donors are amazing and I am so thankful that you chose my project to fund!”

T.E.C.H. (Technology Enhances Classroom Harmony)
Funded Nov 13, 2012I wish you could have seen the look on the faces of my kindergarteners when I opened the package containing my tablet PC! Over half of my students were not familiar with it, but it only took a few minutes of playing around with it for them to understand what fun they can have on it! I have been able to download some great math and reading games on the tablet, and my children rotate during center time to it! They love when it is their turn to play the games on the tablet! I think the best part is that they really don't see the tablet as a learning tool. I know that they are learning valuable knowledge and life skills each time that they hold it, but to a 5 year old, it is just a chance to play on a "computer". The new Common Core State Standards really put an emphasis on integrating technology into the classroom daily, and I have worked very hard to do this for my kindergarteners. I am a firm believer that our world has gone technical and these skills are going to be vital for obtaining a job in the coming years. So, I appreciate you giving my students the advantage of learning these skills during their first year of school, rather than in their last years. Your willingness to help students across the country will not go unnoticed.”

Mrs. Everitt
