My students are a very diverse group of seventh graders. Families in our district speak 43 different languages at home, 23 per cent of our students are on individual plans for special needs, and another 21 percent are English Language Learners. Many students do not have the means to access books to read for pleasure -- so I want to put a book in hand before they leave my class. Seventh graders are hungry to learn, but for many, it is their last chance to get into the habit of reading -- a habit will exponentially improve their learning in all subjects in the future. Research has shown that independent reading improves reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling ability, grammar usage and writing style(Stephen Krashen, Professor Emeriti USC). If my students can start to build the habit of reading for pleasure now, they will be much more likely to learn successfully in the years ahead. Students need a variety or compelling books right in the classroom to get hooked as readers.
