  • Chicken Scratches Do Not the Essay Make

    Funded Jun 28, 2010

What a lifesaver I predict these handwriting materials will be. After having analyzed our students state testing results in June, it showed that many of these students did not write legibly. By providing independent work for these students, each one may work towards improving his/her handwriting. In doing so, it should help our test results when the scorers can actually read the handwriting!

I fondly recall the days of learning to write cursive and getting the privilege of using a cartridge ink pen during fifth grade. Well, supplies have changed drastically bu we find it is still important for students to be able to write well enough.

When I opened the box with the handwriting supplies, my students eyeballed the cursive stencils right off!!!! In fact, I even had some fun with them after school that day!

Bless you for believing in the spirit of the urban classroom. You are what makes America stronger. I am proud to be a teacher! ”

  • Get The Wiggles Out!

    Funded May 23, 2010

We are thoroughly enjoying the new mats and inflatable seats! What a wonderful opportunity you have given us! Being able to "offer" other seating arrangements in my class definitely helps. Did I mention previously that most of my students are boys? To be exact, 80% of the class consists of active young men who have a hard time staying in their seats. Get the picture? tee hee

Anyways, I graciously extend a loud THANK YOU for supporting Donor's Choose and my classroom! Your generosity has helped a dream come true for us!”

  • Gotcha A Clipboard, You Can Write Anywhere!

    Funded Jun 27, 2010

"Mrs.J., I really want to use a clipboard. Have I earned it?" That is music to my ears when kids are noticing that it takes doing "the right thing" to earn something special in class. Having 24 active fifth graders makes me need to be more creative. Since children do not care for sitting still all day, getting to use a clipboard is an alternative. That is, getting to sit on the floor or stand at a counter means they will complete a lesson more readily.

Mucho gracias for providing the funds so that my class may have these colorful clipboards. It has certainly helped them to pay better attention and put more effort into their classwork and handwriting.

Again, thank you so much for being our angel for education!”

  • Let's Just Say, It's Newsworthy!

    Funded Sep 5, 2010

Oh boy, oh boy,oh boy! How I love reading the CURRENT series of magazines. Thank you so much for supporting this project. My students are greatly enjoying CURRENT HEALTH, CURRENT SCIENCE, CURRENT EVENTS and READ selections. They nearly knock me over to be first to get to select which one to read.

It warms my heart when I can provide opportunities to my students that would not happen elsewise. Being a sponsor of Donor's Choose projects is a great task. It is an honor to me that you chose to donate towards this project. Give yourself a big hug from the kids and me! Peace!”

  • What Do Ya Mean? Climate and Weather Aren't the Same Thing?

    Funded Jul 20, 2010

Getting to open up the SALLY RIDE: CLIMATE SCIENCE KIT was quite exciting. After all, my students are learning about weather, climate and relating it to the world.

Being the recipient of a BONUS such as this is such a delightful feeling! The generosity of people like you is what helps teachers like me want to share MORE with my students. Being able to grab fabulous resources is what makes the little moments seem like bigger learning experiences.

Of course, having access to this kit has opened up the minds of my students. They want to know more about weather, climate and natural disasters around the world. What a great opportunity for them to LEARN TO LEARN independently.

Pat yourself on your back. Listen, do you hear the hearty round of applause? It's for you!”

  • Man Your Science Station

    Funded Apr 22, 2010

What a delight it has been to receive and use the SALLY RIDE: MAN YOUR SPACE STATION kit. Ironically, not long after I was notified that this project had been funded, I heard Ms. Ride speak on an NPR radio show. I was so "puffed" realizing that she focused the lessons on girls of 4th and 5th grade ages. Perfect!

Of course, my boys greatly enjoy reading the booklets. They are interesting, easy to read and colorful. Just the right thing to capture their attention.

The "creme de la creme" is that our district moved the Space Study unit to the fall. YIPPEEEE! I now have a wealth of information to share with my students.

Your generosity makes it easier to teach urban students. Thank you sooooooo much for supporting this proposal. You are a dear!”

  • Did Ya See The News About...?

    Funded May 11, 2010

So, just this week, I passed out our TIME FOR KIDS magazine. It was a HOT Friday afternoon and the kids were losing steam, for sure. Since I teach both Science and Social Studies to this crew, it was a perfect time to try out a new trick.

Picture this, sluggish and irritable, is the "before" picture of my class (which only has three girls in it).. The "after" picture, the kids are alert and flipping through the magazine at a good clip. Besides that, I heard lots of "Did you know...?" comments coming from their mouths!

It definitely made my day! Thank you sooooooooo much for sponsoring this project to buy a TIME FOR KIDS subscription. It is a great investment! You are a gem for caring for my students (and me)!!!!!!”

  • "Wimpy Kids" Dominate Our Room! (The Books, That Is.)

    Funded Apr 23, 2010

My class of 24 students (20 boys and 4 girls) could not compose themselves when the Barnes and Noble boxes came recently! From the first moment the WIMPY KIDS books arrived, my students started asking me, "What do we have to do to earn the right to read the NEW books?" What a delight to have them sooooo interested in a series of books.

My ESL students are ecstatic to have access to the books EN ESPANOL. We frequently talk about the fact that they must keep up with their reading and writing in Spanish. Speaking it is easy in their home setting but many of these children do not have Spanish literature at home.

Thank you so very much for sponsoring this proposal. You are truly a gem in my eyes!!!!! ”

  • Special Delivery (but it could be private)!

    Funded Apr 17, 2010

Oh, my gosh, I feel like the "belle of the ball" at my school. Everyone kept asking me, "What's in that BIG delivery box?" When I said it was a class mailbox from Donor's Choose, I felt their envy! tee hee Such a lucky person I am, I am. With my trusty tools, I plan to put it together later this week.

Thank you so very much for supporting educational services and a teacher like me. I am truly honored that you funded this project!!!! It certainly will help to organize my classroom as well as expedite graded papers. No longer will I see little piles of papers lying on the floor because someone did not want to take them home. Each child can be responsible for picking up his/her own "mail" from the class mailbox. Life is good when children learn independence.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you once again! Peace!!!!!!”

  • No Paper Stacks Here!

    Funded Apr 16, 2010

Yippee, we've already taken the dry erase markers for a spin!!!! In math, we are presently reviewing for statewide testing. Students become reluctant to work hard during this time. But, lo and behold all you have to do is change it up a bit. Pulling out the dry erase boards and popping open a new box of dry erase markers certainly did the trick!

I feel totally blessed to be able to use (what seems) such extravagant equipment with my students. The "ole" paper and pencil doesn't have the pizazz nowadays with flat screen tvs, phones with cameras and amazing game systems. These supplies will help make my job easier.

Thank you sooooooooooo much for honoring my class by supporting this Donor's Choose proposal. It is a "little" dream come true in my day! You are the BEST!!!!!!!!”
