The donation of self-care essentials to my classroom has made a profound impact on my students' well-being, particularly in helping to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm. High school can be an overwhelming experience for many students, especially those facing academic pressures, personal challenges, or external stressors. By providing access to self-care items such as stress-relief tools, hygiene products, and comfort items, I have witnessed a noticeable shift in the classroom atmosphere. Students now have resources available to help them self-regulate their emotions, refocus their energy, and feel supported throughout the school day.
Before receiving these donations, many of my students struggled with managing stress, often expressing feelings of overwhelm, frustration, and anxiety during the school day. Some lacked access to basic self-care items, which affected their confidence and ability to concentrate. Now, with the availability of essentials such as lotion, tissues, lip balm, stress balls, and fidget tools, students have developed small but effective coping strategies to ease their anxiousness. Whether it's applying lotion to soothe dry hands, using a stress ball during moments of restlessness, or simply having access to hygiene products to feel refreshed, these simple comforts have made a tangible difference in their day-to-day experience.
Additionally, these resources have helped to create a more relaxed and emotionally safe environment in my classroom. When students feel physically comfortable and have access to tools that support their well-being, they are better able to focus on learning rather than their stressors. I have observed fewer instances of students feeling overwhelmed to the point of disengagement, and more students taking proactive steps to manage their emotions in healthy ways. The presence of these items has also encouraged open conversations about mental health and self-care, helping students recognize the importance of taking care of themselves both inside and outside the classroom.
Beyond individual benefits, these donations have contributed to a collective sense of calm in the classroom. When students feel cared for and supported, they are more likely to treat their peers with kindness and respect. The simple act of providing self-care essentials has reinforced the idea that my classroom is not just a place for academics, but also a space where students' emotional well-being matters. This has helped foster a sense of community and mutual support, where students feel safe to express themselves and seek help when needed.
The generosity of those who have contributed to these donations has had a lasting impact, not just in the short-term reduction of stress, but in helping my students develop lifelong habits of self-care and emotional regulation. By addressing these fundamental needs, we are not only improving focus and engagement in the classroom but also empowering students with the tools to navigate stress and anxiety in their everyday lives. These small but meaningful acts of kindness have made my classroom a more supportive, calming, and inclusive environment, and for that, I am truly grateful.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Murillo
