Funded May 3, 2024As soon as I shared with the students that we would be giving a robot to one student in each grade level who attends the STEM showcase, they were committed to coming! They were excited about entering the drawing to take a robot home after getting to explore robots during the showcase. The robot stations at the showcase were the most popular activity, and that's including the tough competition of the classroom pets and chicks they got to explore! One thing I loved seeing at the showcase was whole families enjoying the technology together. Students' younger siblings, cousins, aunts, grandparents, you name it. They all loved experiencing the tools we use to engage students at our school. We had Lego robotics, MBots, Minecraft for Education, and even a CD Rom opened up to study the parts inside.
Another way this project impacted our students was securing their opportunity to present their learning to their families and guests. The ticket to enter the drawing was a checklist that students completed during the showcase. That checklist included items to show guests: Science projects, garden beds outside, class pets, and science journal work included. After they showed their own work, they got to enter the drawing. That action bridges the connection between home and school, and it encourages students to communicate their learning effectively. The pride was evident as students talked about their work. Then they were excited to go to the STEM stations and get a chance to take a robot home. The students who won the raffle were over the moon! They opened them and enjoyed them at school, and they talked about sharing them with people at home next. The joy was contagious!”
