Fostering a Love for Reading in Fifth Grade

Funded Sep 25, 2024

My co-teacher and I would like to express our sincere gratitude for your donations. The books that your donations helped us add to our classroom library have changed the way our reluctant readers approach reading. In our classroom, we begin our day with ten to fifteen minutes of independent reading time. At the start of the school year, there were a handful of students who would pick a book from the classroom library and go through the motions, turning the pages and looking at the words. While our classroom library had a variety of chapter books, graphic novels, biographies, and books on numerous topics, there was a gap in our selection that needed to be filled to help all of our students not only access texts but also enjoy what they were reading. With your donations, we were able to fill that gap.

As soon as I showed students the hi-lo books, their faces lit up. The variety of topics piqued their interest immediately, so much so that they tried to take three or four books at a time! Some students even asked to take the books home! It has been a joy to watch these students take the initiative each morning to read their hi-lo books, knowing that they can access the text without the anxiety or frustration they felt at the start of the school year.

Your generosity has played a significant role in helping to shift how students view reading. They are building confidence and becoming more competent readers with the ability to think critically and engage in learning in meaningful ways. Thank you for opening the door to new possibilities by helping to foster a love for reading in fifth grade.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Nicole
