All of our before school clubs foster a love for reading and appreciation. We integrate the clubs with other areas of interest all while developing that love for reading. The first year I implemented Battle of the Books and we competed in Jeopardy style games with questions about the eight required chapter books we read. The second year, I added the Wonder book club and A Wrinkle in Time book club along with our continuation of Battle of the Books. We read the books, discussed the lessons learned from reading these stories, and then went to the theater to watch and then compare and contrast the books and the movies. This year the students have asked for additional clubs. They talked me into starting a writing club, photography club, and drama club in addition to our existing clubs. All the clubs are based on reading books or plays and extension activities to go along with the books such as writing a sequel. These clubs do require some funding. We need to purchase writing folders and post-it notes for our writing club and scripts for our drama club. We will also need photo mats to show case their photos after reading Half a Chance and participating in their own photography contest.
