Snacks for Hungry Newcomers to Focus on Learning
Funded Oct 6, 2024Your generous donation was used to snacks which are essential materials for our classroom. These snacks were essential in meeting the needs of all our students and ensuring that hunger did not get in the way of their education. This donation not only set the foundations of a well-resourced classroom but helped make this classroom a more supportive, comfortable and welcoming space for our English Language Learner students.
The snacks were used to keep students motivated and focused. They were also used in discussion-based activities to increase student comfortability with talking to peers. This is especially important in an English Learner Sheltered course where it is important to mitigate for language barriers to accessing a rigorous Social Studies curriculum. English Learner Civics students used the snacks as Kahoot reward after checking understanding on Policy-related vocabulary words. They munched on some animal crackers as they reflected on their group poster assignment and gave each other shoutouts and feedback.
The attached photos are a very few of the many assignments and projects where students used snacks to fueling their minds and stay focused! Although there are many more needs in the classroom (from hygiene products to books and literacy-support materials), this donation has been vital to the well being of our students and the rigor of their work. Snacks are awesome- Thank you!”

Funded Oct 18, 2024Your generous donation was used to purchase essential materials for our classroom like pencils, color pencils, colored papers and glue sticks. These materials not only set the foundations of a well-resourced classroom but also help us fill the gap created by the financial and material hardship that many of our students are in. This donation not only provides them with basic school materials but allows them to focus more on their learning, feel more comfortable and supported, and eases anxiety lacking materials.
Using these materials, our students have created a variety of products--from creating informative posters for a Civics Election project to intentionally personalizing the Binders that house all their class work. Students have shown considerable commitment, excitement and creativity when given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge with assignments that rely on these materials. It is because of this supply of glue sticks, colored paper and color pencils that students could engage with visuals and project-based assessments. This not only allows us to create an accessible curriculum but celebrates students who are visual and kinesthetic learners. Our English Language Learners are able to bring their imagination and thinking to life without the barrier of words.
The attached photos are a very few of the many ways that our students have started making use of our supply shelf. Although there are many more needs in the classroom (from hygiene products to books and literacy-support materials), this donation has been vital to the well being of our students and the rigor of their work. Thank you.”
