Graphic Healing

Funded Oct 28, 2024

Using the materials from the grant has allowed us to add a vibrant space for exploration and understanding of mental health through literature and art. We were able to add a "Graphic Healing" section to the Social Work Office where students can engage with graphic novels, music, and hands-on-activities like origami and games. A recent project involved using graphic novels to explore characters' struggles with anxiety and depression. In small group discussions, students were able to connect these fictional experiences with their own feelings, leading to a deeper understanding of their emotions. This approach helps with fostering coping strategies.

When our students first saw the new materials, their reactions were curious and excited. They asked questions, thumbed through pages of the novels, and I could see the wheels turning in their minds as they began taking in the vibrant illustrations. Moving forward we plan to expand this initiative by acquiring more books and resources that address a wider rage of mental health topics.”
