  • Snacks for Students

    Funded Nov 2, 2024

I could not thank you enough for your generous contributions. I have used the resources to incentivize math tutoring during lunch and after school. Student attendance has increased now that my co-teacher and I can provide snacks to our students. Math tutoring has gained a set of students who have become "regulars" and their consistent attendance has led to growth in their test scores. The donated snacks help cultivate a fun, low-stakes, environment where students can get their math work done in a safe and positive space.

My students were very excited when they first saw the snacks. They now know that if they are hungry, they can always come to the geometry classroom for a "pick-me-up" snack. The next step for my classroom is to capitalize on the increased attendance during afterschool tutoring by inviting targeted students for state exam prep. State exam prep begins after spring break and this will allow students to get that small-group instruction. Having snacks is just a bonus to further incentive exam prep.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Himed

  • Supporting Student Mental Health

    Funded Sep 24, 2024

My students often need a break from the monotony of a traditional classroom setting geared toward standardized testing. I put all the resources into a bin and dubbed it the De-Stress bin. Students can get therapy putty when they are working on their math problems. Other students who are having a bad day can use the scratchy notes and draw or write something motivational and they know they will have to turn in their math work at a later time. They reacted excited and at first, I did not have enough to go around. Then we came to an understanding that these are tools that aim to support you in focusing or destress not toys.

A specific moment was when a class finished their math work early and I handed out a scratchy note and told them to draw or write something motivational. They taped their notes alongside the lockers in our classroom to encourage their peers and uplift anyone who might be having a bad day. My goal or next steps are to have the lockers covered with motivational messages from students past and present so that the positivity is spread.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Himed
