My students are submerged in an urban culture with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. They have to deal daily with negative situations, financial struggles, and apathetic people. I found that we have a connecting point through music. These students demonstrate, while playing their instruments, that music does make a difference. They have become the most positive, disciplined, motivated and appreciative students that I have ever had the privilege to teach. They love to help and hang around the band room. I have been asked, "How did you learn to play all these instruments?" They are fascinated to learn about being a music major in college and many of the older students are now learning a secondary instrument for fun. They are realizing how positive and enjoyable a life including music can be.
