My 5th grade class is filled with diverse learners and many struggling readers. Finding a way to encourage, engage and excite them to read is a difficult task. They are living in a world of technology that has a way of keeping them engaged, the way books used to keep us engaged. However, I have found the answer to making this task a little easier. I’ll never forget the day one of my students chose a reward at recess to read a book on an e-reader, instead of playing a game on the iPad!!! Wait, what??? He wanted to read and not play games?! What made this more exciting was the fact that he was a struggling reader who would never read for pleasure. I finally had him “hooked”! This was all thanks to a most engaging piece of technology - an electronic reader. In fact, the other students in the class were most jealous that he was able to spend his recess reading on the e-reader and they all began to choose that as a reward. Can you imagine my delight...my students wanting to read!
