Spooky Slip Casting - A Differentiated Approach to Ceramics

Funded Sep 19, 2024

I can not thank you enough for the wonderful opportunity you have allotted my students with your donations towards such a unique project.

Slip casting is an intricate process that allows artists to create multiple ceramic pieces that are or are almost identical. Students were able to teach and speak on this process after learning it effectively through guided instruction in my class.

Through this collaborative process, many of my juniors and seniors had the opportunity to be peer collaborative leaders for the students in our Academics, Career, and Essential Skills (ACES) Program. My Ceramics students worked in small groups to slip cast artworks. Other groups of Ceramics students then volunteered after school to teach the ACES students both about their progress and how to glaze their pieces effectively. With the help of paraprofessionals and educators, Ceramics students helped guide the ACES students through this process via modeling and direct assistance. The ACES students were then able to take their completed pieces home as a keepsake.

Without your donations towards this project, my students would have never had the opportunity to learn this special process. In addition to this, without your donations, the ACES students might never have had the opportunity to even work in the ceramics classroom. Thank you for providing an invaluable experience to these Brooklyn high schoolers.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Ordonez
