Sensory Equipment for Students with Intense Sensory Needs

Funded Dec 3, 2024

Since receiving the sensory equipment, I've seen an incredible impact on my students. One of our favorite moments was when we introduced the new fidget tools and calming sensory items during a group session. One student, who typically struggles with maintaining focus, was able to engage for the first time in a long time, using a Thera-ball chair to help channel their energy while participating in a reading task. It's incredible to witness how something as simple as a textured mat, flexible seating, or weighted blanket can make such a difference in their ability to stay present and focused.

The excitement in the room was palpable! Some students were so eager to try out the new tools that they immediately began experimenting with them, while others took a bit longer, but quickly realized how calming and helpful the resources were. One student even said, "It feels like a hug!" when using the new weighted blanket. That moment alone showed me how valuable these materials are in supporting their sensory needs and helping them regulate throughout the school day.

We are still working on setting up a designated space for sensory regulation, but with the sensory equipment now integrated into our routine, I'm planning to incorporate more individualized sensory breaks throughout the day, allowing students to use the materials in between tasks to reset and refocus. For our next lesson, we'll focus on a multi-sensory approach to learning letters and numbers, where students will be able to touch textured boards and use quiet noise-canceling headphones during our lesson. I'm excited to see how these resources continue to support their growth, not just in learning, but in developing coping skills and emotional regulation that will last far beyond the classroom.”

With gratitude,
