Reading aloud to students builds background knowledge, increases vocabulary, and exposes them to complex sentence structure. I have a lot of books on tape, but this old technology slurs the speech of the reader and makes it hard to understand. I have other read aloud books on CDs but my player broke and my selection was limited. My students need a device to listen to a story. While I work with a small group of readers, I need a center for the students to listen to quality stories of their choice. My hope is to provide at least 6 Chromebooks with headphones and a mouse so students can access Getepic.com, a website that has more than 35,000 books for read alouds. These Chromebooks will allow students to pick a story of interest and read the words while listening to the story. This engaging, valuable activity is one part of a reading program that helps students become proficient readers.
