  • Writing Book Club!

    Funded Oct 26, 2021

Thank you so much for supporting teachers grow! Through this project, we have been able to support writing leads in each grade level through instructional focused learning all year long. These leads, not only support their grade level partners through horizontal support and growth, but also as a vertical community of writing leads. We have used these resources to learn together to support our writers just where they are at on the writing continuum and also brainstorm ways to include joy and identity in all that we in our writing communities. Thank you so much for trickle down support from literacy coaches, to teacher leaders, to teachers to students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Solarek

  • Books, Books, Books

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

Thank you so much for you generous donation! Through your support, this project was able to purchase decodable books that enable our early readers to apply their sound knowledge and engage in independent reading. Daily I get to witness young 5 and 6 year old readers that are so proud of how they can actually read the words on the page of the book. These books will be used across the classrooms this year and for years to come.

Without the support of Donors Choose and our community--getting these books would be much more challenging--thanks for removing that stress! Thanks again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Solarek

  • Hot and Fresh (Equity) Books!

    Funded May 4, 2021

Thank you so much for your contribution to this project. Through your donation, we've been able to use these books in many ways. Primarily we have used these range of diverse texts to support text based comprehension lessons. Text based question lessons are an equitable strategy to use with students because it grounds all of the learning in what we are not learning in the text rather than what do you know and what experiences have you had in the world. These questions are connected to grade level standards and skills, which allow for rigorous discussion and discourse for all students regardless of the personal reading level.

These books will be used in a range of classrooms and for years to come. Thank you so much!”

  • Esperanza Rising All 5th Grade Book Club!

    Funded Feb 23, 2021

Thank you so much for your generous support on this project! Due to your support, all 65 fifth graders have their own personal copy of this text at home to follow along with their teacher. This text is incredibly rich and what our 5th grade students need to develop their literacy reading skills. With these books, this unit has transformed into an interactive learning lesson every single day! We look forward to using these books every day for the six weeks in both reading and writing. Our students have also learned so much about the Mexican Revolution along the way. Thanks so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Solarek

  • We Need Books for Home Book Clubs!

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Wow! I can not say thank you enough for such a fast turnaround with this project. We needed these book to give away at a materials pick up event in order to start the new unit together on the following Monday--and thanks to you ALL, we DID IT!

Today I watched as the 5th grade students followed along with all the 5th grade teachers as they read the book aloud with their own books at home. The engagement and participation is so high with such a rich, grade level text. Thank again so much for providing this remote learning opportunity for our students.”

  • We NEED Books for HOME!

    Funded Oct 17, 2020

This donation has already had a HUGE impact! This donation supported kindergartners to have access to the read aloud books at home. This fall as teacher read book virtually to students they were able to follow along at home with their own copy. Also, due to your support--students that home language is Spanish additionally had the read aloud in Spanish to gain greater access to the book. Thank you so much! This project feels like it keeps on giving because as these students are starting to learning letters, sound and words they are able to go on hunts to find these letters and words.

    Thank you so much!”

  • Zoom! Read! Grow!

    Funded May 14, 2020

Thank you all so much for your generous donation to our project! When schools closed last spring, teachers needed to think of innovative ways to support all students, but especially our English Language Learners. This project supported this exact cause! With this extra set of books, ELL teachers were able to pre-read books to our first grade students prior to the whole group lesson with their teacher. This supported for deeper comprehension and greater access to the whole group learning. These books now in the new school year are being used again with the new group of first graders.

Thanks for your support! It's making a huge impact!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Solarek

  • Ready, Set, ZOOM for Third Graders!

    Funded May 22, 2020

Thank you so much for donations to this project! Through your generosity, teachers in third grade have been able to deliver their reading lesson virtually during this pandemic. This project funded the purchase of all of the mentor texts for the reading lessons in third grade. These books have additionally been used by the English Language teachers to help with pre-reading of the book to support with comprehension prior to the reading in the whole group.

These books have allowed teachers to be innovative and responsive in this virtual space. Thank you so much supporting teachers and students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Solarek

  • Teachers LOVE to Grow As Learners too!

    Funded Oct 17, 2019

Thank you so much for you generous donation to growing teachers knowledge and skills around teaching reading. These books have been used in so many ways, conversations, planning sessions and now virtually as we plan for remote learning. Not only have they been used to grow teacher capacity, they have also been shared with our Instructional Assistants who work so closely with students during independent reading. This has allowed for such a deeper level of collaboration between teacher and instructional assistants.

We look forward to using these books for years to come as we learn to plan, collaborate and teach in this new world.”

My students are amazing citizens. They are inspiring individuals and I take pride in that their 6 hours with me each day need to be the best 6 hours of their entire day. The school that I work at is in budget crisis and the money that we do have isn't allotted to changing the aesthetic atmosphere of the school. Thus, I have taken it upon myself to change my classroom into a home for my students. I want them to have pride and ownership in our classroom and their learning. I feel that if they feel like school is a home they will feel safe and do their best to succeed in the hours that they are with me.
